“Tonight, I’m doing all handicapped jokes,” Dave Chappelle says as he pulls the trigger in his new Netflix special, The Dreamer. “They’re not as organized as the gays, and I love punching down.”
That’s the line that is causing keyboards across social media to explode. From transgenders to the handicapped; Dave Chappelle’s verbal sparring is out on everyone who is physically, mentally, and emotionally damaged. Crude and mean doesn’t stop the laughter, however, as the Netflix special continues the long-form machinations of a man who isn’t bothered by his wit and butterfly stories being lost in millennial woke translation.
Chappelle seems to be in cruise control; knowing that any message he may have will be lost in agenda-driven tweets; opting instead to skip having a message and solidly deliver on jokes, stories, and the occasional moment of clarity to point out the crazy in his life, both outside and inside the bubble of celebrity.
Chappelle’s jabs include a bit where he reports meeting former North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who uses a wheelchair after he was partially paralyzed in a 2014 car crash and famous for his allegations that he was invited to s*x parties in Washington.
“I don’t doubt they do this shit in Washington [but] who the f**k invites a paraplegic to an orgy?” “I just walked away,” Chappelle jokes. “I wanted him to see me do something he couldn’t do. I skipped.”
The comic takes aim again at transgenderism — Chappelle had ridiculed the community in his 2021 special “The Closer,” which sparked a massive employee walkout at Netflix as well as protests.
“God forbid I ever go to jail. But if I do, I hope it’s in California. As soon as the judge sentences me, I’ll be like, ‘Before you sentence me, I want the court to know I identify as a woman. Send me to a woman’s jail.’ As soon I get in there, you know what I’mma be doing. ‘Give me your fruit cocktail, b**ch, before I knock your motherf**king teeth out. I’m a girl, just like you, b**ch. Come here and s**k this girl d**k I got. Don’t make me explain myself. I’m a girl.’”
Later in the special, Chappelle talked about his on-stage attack at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022, which was carried out by an attacker brandishing a replica gun and knife. Chappelle recalled trying to diffuse the situation after it happened by informing the L.A. crowd;
“A trans man was there!” “Boo! Here in L.A., we love trans people!”…”I triggered them because I had done LBGTQ jokes and it turns out this fella was a ‘B.‘ ” and “had a knife that identified as a gun.” He also made a joke about how his attacker “could have been r*ped” since he knew the attacker was bisexual.

The special is coming off the heels of an incident in Miami where an audience member decided to pull out a cell phone in the middle of Chappelle’s performance, prompting the show’s instant cancellation and a crowd of angry fans at the end of the night. Though the incident was caused by an audience member breaking the show’s rules (no cell phones to maintain the show’s integrity), the media appeared poised to use the incident to pre-judge Chappelle’s special. Besides the common slings from transgender haters, some critics have expressed dissatisfaction over his recent stand-up specials, citing lengthy digressions that resembled venting rather than funny routines.
The social media-fixated public fixated might view Dave Chappelle as an outdated comedian who is seeking a new social class to offend in an effort to sustain his popularity. This is peculiar, considering that fans and professional media openly pleaded for him to come back in 2015. Nonetheless, it seems that Chappelle has made a sizable fortune from his seven Netflix culture war disputes, leading him to the fame and wealth to be a dominate contender in comedy.
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, the comedian revealed that in 2023, he is selling more tickets than any other comedic headlining act and earning $62 million from 31 shows. With this special being one more notch on a belt that he has no problem swinging, expect a few quick zingers, some big swipe crude stories, and a knockout of laughter.
